Joe Perry: “They had plenty of attitude, but I thought they handled their new stardom really well. You could tell when they had a bad night, but they were always on time and always gave their best. Axl really knew how to work an audience. I noticed that their crew taped foam rubber around everything that he might touch— teleprompters, his mike stand—to make sure he wouldn’t break anything, or hurt himself. We saw that [Axl] was basically let out of his cage, and then thrown onstage. The sheer fury of it was almost naked. The thrill was, what was he going to do next? We respected them after we saw them. They had that solidarity, like a gang that played music together, which is just what you want in a band. They showed us how rock could move forward. People were saying you couldn’t get any better than the Stones, or Zeppelin; and [Guns] came along and inspired people. You think it’s all written, but it’s not. There’s always another way to twist those three chords around.”
